Stage Description Major description Comment
1 Purpose identified, proposal to investigate formed Concept / Idea phase
2 Purpose verified Eg:
  • Benchmarking shows that the current system spends a significant amount of time doing what we aim to improve
  • Demonstration that the proposal would be useful
3 Proof of concept / prototype built "bleeding edge"
4 Prototype tested in "lab" environment Eg:
  • Actually works
5 Critical functions tested in "lab" environment Eg:
  • Actually has a chance at doing its job and meeting any requirements
    • Like that it is actually better than the old way
6 Prototype now provisional version, and is tested in a relevant environment "cutting edge" Provisional version may enter traditional "alpha", "beta" versions.
7 Provisional version now a release candidate and is (observed) operating in relevant environment Release candidate abbreviated RC
8 Accepted for use, "mission ready" or "operational" status achieved. May now be called "stable" "Stable" / "Mature" Not yet mature or battle-hardened
9 Operationally proven, "battle-hardened", "mature", "tried and tested" Few improvements (in fact any changes at all) can be expected by this stage.
