Definition

Traditionally:

  • [math]\max(x,y):=\left\{\begin{array}{lr}x & \text{if }x\ge y\\ y & \text{otherwise}\end{array}\right.[/math]
  • [math]\min(x,y):=\left\{\begin{array}{lr}x & \text{if }x\le y\\ y & \text{otherwise}\end{array}\right.[/math]
